Place and Fold: Archetype _MR Performance

Place and Fold is a mixed reality performance that remembers and mourns those who have disappeared or are disappearing.

Choreographer Joowon Song understands both human and non-human beings as living entities. Taking loss, extinction, and death as fundamental concerns, she explores the possibility of a shared, communal experience of mourning and remembrance with the audience. Building upon her long-term research on space and place developed through the PungJeong.Gak series, this work investigates choreographic methods for transforming space into place, combining the choreography of “place and fold” with that of mourning and memory. In Place and Fold, “place” signifies the entanglement of existences, while “fold” evokes the unfolding and refolding of beings as spaces of mourning and remembrance. Through the act of choreography, these folds of existence are summoned and shaped into places.

The choreographer poses the question: “In mixed reality works where media and body are intertwined, how does choreography transform space into place? And how can it re-script the audience’s memory and body?” The audience moves between augmented and virtual realities, becoming both player and performer, traversing physical and virtual spaces. Through their interactions—with virtual beings, digital environments, and one another—the threads of mourning are woven, the folds of existence are gently touched, and new memories are inscribed.
